Mission
Our primary goal at Detroit Street Care is to meet the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness in the City of Detroit by seeking them out in an environment and manner in which they feel comfortable and in control. These needs most often include basic necessities such as food, water, and clothing, in addition to medical and healthcare services, which is provided by medical student volunteers working under the guidance of physician preceptors. We strive to provide our patients with the highest level of care possible while also providing an avenue for valuable clinical training for our student volunteers.

Detroit Street Care gives students the chance to volunteer on street runs, where we drive around Detroit to find people in need and offer things like food, clothing, and basic medical care—often with a physician on board. We also do medical outreach runs at local food kitchens, where we set up camp and help care for folks right there. It’s all volunteer-based, shifts happen several times a week, and we’re sometimes joined by nurses or doctors to help guide us.

Sigma Sigma Phi is an Honorary Osteopathic Service Fraternity. Its objectives and purposes are to further the science of osteopathic medicine and its standards of practice, to improve the scholastic standing and promote a higher degree of fellowship among its students, to bring about a closer relationship and understanding between the student bodies and the officials and members of the faculties of our colleges, and to foster allegiance to the American Osteopathic Association and to perpetuate these principles and the teachings through the maintenance and development of this organization. Every year, first year MSUCOM students are invited to join SSP. A maximum of 25% of COM’s students may be selected for induction.
